The six properties that make up a profile

Two for the body, two for the heart, two for the mind. How you are built is the ratio between each pair.

A chronobiological profile is not a list of adjectives. It is six measured properties, in three pairs, and it is the ratio within each pair that describes a person. Plants carry only the first pair; animals carry four; human beings carry all six.

The physical pair: reflection and activity

Reflection is the capacity to take the world in: perception, receptivity, patience, the accurate reading of faces, sounds, colours and situations. In its simplest form it is the instinct that sorts everything around us into useful or harmful, safe or dangerous. It is a steady, continuous process. Activity is the opposite direction: the capacity to act on the world and get a result. Will, drive, coordination, the ability to express and assert. It works in bursts. A person with more reflection than activity absorbs a great deal and moves carefully; a person with more activity than reflection moves first and absorbs on the way. The ratio between the two is the temperament, and the method distinguishes seven.

The emotional pair: the I-strength and the We-strength

The I-strength, adaptation, is the ability to govern your own emotions: to keep yourself steady, to hold your inner state constant when circumstances change, and, where possible, to arrange circumstances so that they suit you. It is also the seat of emotional memory. The We-strength, integration, is the ability to direct feeling outward: empathy, friendship, the instinct to solve problems for the group and to find the solution that is good for as many people as possible. Most misunderstandings between two people who love each other come down to a different balance of this pair. The ratio gives one of six emotional types.

The intellectual pair: artistic thinking and logical thinking

Artistic thinking, intuition in self-knowledge, is the ability to see the whole at once: images, gestalt, fantasy, the original idea that arrives complete. Logical thinking, intuition in worldview, is the ability to assemble the parts: concepts, sequence, analysis, classification, the jigsaw put together piece by piece. The first is fast and continuous; the second is slower and works in steps. The two are independent of each other, and each can run anywhere from almost nothing to almost everything. How much of both you have gives your level of mental energy; which one leads gives your type. Together that makes eight intellectual types, and it is the level on which decisions are made.

Seven temperaments, six emotional types, eight intellectual types. Every person is one of each, and because the three levels combine independently, that makes 336 distinct profiles. That is what the Self-Awareness Session lays out, level by level.
